How did my move to Mexico come about? The Global Pandemic (COVID-19) was winding down, or so we thought. I was living in Dallas, Texas and one day it occurred to me, “why not move to Mexico?” I was single, never had kids (or grandkids) and retired. I was never one of those people that had the dream to retire abroad. It never occured to me, frankly. The travel bans were lifted and in November, 2020 I headed to Veracruz, Mexico for 3 weeks. Veracruz is on the Gulf Coast and the 2nd largest port in Mexico.
Veracruz is a large city with just about everything you could want. I stayed in an AirBnB with my dear cousin Marcela, visited family whom I had not seen in many years and with a face mask securely fastened, we looked at furnished apartments. Part of the allure of a move to Mexico was certainly the cost of living (#1), but weather and family were a close 2nd (tied?).
I found areas and apartment/condominium buildings that I liked, and decided I would move for a year, and see how it went. I made plans, purchased air tickets, gave notice on my apartment in Dallas, and started organizing the move for January 2021. But COVID-19 had other plans. In early January, the “lockdowns” started again. There was another wave of infections, and traveling was not advised, and certainly not a relocation to another country.
My plans were put on hold.
