Los Cabos

In English, Cabo means Cape. Los Cabos refers to two different towns in Baja California Sur, Mexico: San Lucas and San Jose. They told us that San Lucas is more a “party” town and San Jose is quieter. They are both extremely beautiful with awesome resorts and cute “downtowns.”

My dear friend Suzette (aka: Nikki) was celebrating her “sweet 60th” and planned a trip to Los Cabos last October. There were 15 of us who traveled to spend her special day with her. Everyone but myself traveled from the USA (Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas, Houston & Dallas). It was a group that knew one another (mostly) for many years.

My trip didn’t start off very well. When I made my airplane reservation in October 2023, I found that the only way from Puerto Vallarta to Los Cabos was with a connection. The best connection I found was through Guadalajara. Made sense to me. I got a good airfare, too.

Viva Aerobus is a Mexican airline, known for it’s budget airfares. It’s like the “Spirit Airlines” of Mexico. The good news is most of their airplanes are newer and nice, honestly. The bad news is that everything is “extra” and the extras add up. Any beverage or snack on board is sold, nothing is free. Not even water. You pay for your seat, carry on baggage, etc. And they are famous for cancelling, delaying or changing your flight on a regular basis.

About a month after I reserved my flight, the connection through Guadalajara was cancelled and I was rebooked on flights connecting in Mexico City. NO! Not my favorite airport. Traveling north in Mexico required that I first fly south. Unfortunately, on my travel date, my flight out of Puerto Vallarta was delayed… 4 hours. Although my connection required a 3 hour layover, I missed my flight to Los Cabos. The airline rebooked me the following day. But that wasn’t good enough. I already missed part of the first day of our girl’s weekend. I wasn’t going to miss another.

I decided to buy another ticket on a different airline in order to arrive in Los Cabos that same day. It required a 5 hour layover in Mexico City. I did spend it rather comfortably in the VIP Lounge. I finally arrived at the Secrets all-inclusive, adults only resort around 11pm. Suzette and I shared a room at this lovely resort. Suzette is a party planner and she sure had this entire weekend planned. From pool parties, to spa appointments to great meals and a full-day tour!

It was a fun-filled weekend: lots of sunshine, Tequila, friends and laughter. I didn’t partake in the tequila too much, but did enjoy the weekend. Here are some pictures:

One of the highlights of this trip, at least for me, was the boat trip to the famous Arch in Cabo San Lucas. Once I got home, I decided to do a little research on this famous arch, and here is what I found. The arch is three stories tall which was formed from natural erosion. It is thought to be more than 115 million years old! It marks the point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. It is actually quite beautiful, and the only thing that encouraged me to shake off my fear of boats and seasickness. Yes, I boarded a small boat with the group and went out into the ocean to exerience it firsthand. The arch is really breathtaking, the sea was rough – but not too bad.

This was thrilling – there we were on the boat and the captain says we are going out further into the ocean to see if we can spot any whales. What?! That put a little fear into me, the sea was rough and it was very windy. But, surprising us all was a little wave from a whale cruising along just ahead of us!

It was a great weekend, and fortunately, my trip home was uneventful. A smooth flight home, no delays. It was great seeing another part of Mexico. It was my first time to Baja California Sur. And it is an amazing location for a beautiful vacation.

I’ve known Suzette (Suzy) for almost 25 years. She is a true friend for life. She made this weekend special for all of us, even though it was for her special day. “True friends are never apart, maybe in distance, but never in heart.” -Unknown

Of course, I went down there when I was in the hotel business for work. But in recent years, we’ve been doing girls trips down to San Jose del Cabo. we love the quieter side and love their downtown especially on Thursday nights for the art walk. Music, dining, dancing, and fabulous art of all types. We didn’t go this year, so I’m missing it! Hope you are well

So rare to maintain friendships over two decades. Clearly, you and Suzy are special. I see your determination through your travels by air and sea.

Back in 2008, on our sailboat La Vita, we sailed from Ensenada down baja and around the tip of Cabo. Siting in a boat and looking up at those three-story high arches is a breath-taking sight.
