It’s the Water

I’ve often heard “it’s the water” about many things. Let’s start with, we can’t live without it.

The Bible has a lot to say about it.

Why the topic of water? It just came to me today. Perhaps because, living where I do, I’m surrounded by water… namely Bahia de Banderas and the Pacific Ocean. And the view from my living room window, where I sit today, has a lovely view of the community pool. You know something funny? I love living near the beach. I do love an ocean view, I love the look and feel the ocean provides. But, and here’s the funny part, I don’t go into the ocean, except for an occasional toe dip. I don’t like boats, I’m afraid of sea sickness, which I suffer from. Perhaps it all goes back to an almost drowning incident when I was young (8 or 9?) in the ocean while vacationing in Mexico. In addition, my inner ear problem stemming from my brain surgery in early 2015 affects my balance. So the motion of the ocean is not my thing.

I have faced that fear, of sea sickness, just this year. While visiting Los Cabos with a large group of girl friends, I did go on a small boat that took us out to the Arch. Which is quite beautiful. It was about a 45 minute ride there and back. The waves were a bit rough. But I survived it without incident. As well, recently, with family visiting, we went on a large catamaran voyage out to an island off of Puerto Vallarta. The sea journey was one hour there and one hour back. The visit to the private island consisted of a lovely buffet dinner and show. It was very nice. And although the trip out was in rough seas, I also survived it without incident.

Have I completely overcome my fear? Not sure. Will I be taking a cruise? No, not any time soon. I just can’t get beyond being on a boat in the sea for 3, 7, 10 days with no hope of getting off, if I get sick.

Let’s move on… “it’s the water”. They say that the reason New York City (NYC) bagels are so good (and they are!), is the water. That NYC water is one of the best in the USA. Legend or Myth? Speaking of water. Is it that bad in Mexico? Will it really make you sick? The short answer is yes. If you are in a full-service resort, perhaps they filter their water from the restaurants to the guest rooms. But when you live here, it’s well known that the water sources here are not reliable. Me? I only drink bottled water.

So, that’s my story on water. Just some random points. Simple.

We’ve been told the water in our local area is good. However, the contaminated comes from holding tanks and pipes delivering the water. I hold the same belief for water in the US, too. Therefore, we use bottled water to make coffee and drink.

I’d like to add, when we go out to eat, we pay special attention to how the ice is added to the drinks. Does the person use their bare hands? or a device to add ice to the glass? Lot’s of bugs live on our hands (and if we cough on the ice) and can be delivered via the ice.

Congratulations on facing your fear of water!

Yes, there are many here in Mexico that drink water from the tap, don’t wash their fruits & vegetables and say they are fine. Maybe they have a stomach of steel. I don’t, so I don’t risk it. Yes, and I still carry hand sanitizer wherever I go (in the car, in my handbag, in my home). You can never be too sure. And handwashing is still not commonplace here. And as for the fear of water, perhaps somewhat conquered, though I still don’t think I’ll be sailing anywhere soon.
